Dodge Park Splash Pad

This one’s a Metro Detroit classic. The splash pad at Dodge Park is perfect for toddlers through tweens. It’s clean, fun, and has just enough shade for parents to sip a coffee while keeping an eye on the water war. Bonus: There’s a playground and walking trail nearby!

Bike Riding at Stony Creek Metropark

Pack the bikes and a picnic! Stony Creek offers beautiful paved trails that are kid-friendly (and parent-knee friendly too). It’s the perfect way to burn off energy, spot turtles, and maybe sneak in a peaceful moment by the water.

Mini Golf and Ice Cream (aka the Perfect Combo)

We love a good round of putt putt, and recently checked out a new course. It was worth the drive! The kids had fun and we went about an hour before they closed so the sun was low, the temps were perfect and we had plenty of shade. Coach’s Ice Cream is our go-to spot after. Their waffle cone nachos are legendary, and if your kid doesn’t leave with a sprinkle-covered grin, did it even happen? My personal go to is the m&m wizzer, I can’t bring myself to stray from my favorite treat.

When I knew we were tossing a holiday theme into the mix, I had the perfect excuse to order this little gingerbread man outfit from one of my favorite vendors.

With some creative photoshopping I was able to get a fun little winter wonderland photo of the family. I love that it looks like a view from outside. A family in matching Christmas jammies makes me smile. It’s so sweet to think back on my own kids when they were just little ones and we all wore matching outfits. Now it’s “cringe”, so I get to live vicariously through my clients.

Poor Luca was worn out from all the fun. So I asked if he was a good sleeper, because if so, I’d love to get him posed when he’s asleep. It was far easier to do when he was a baby, but these images were worth the fight. Of course now as the little chunk he is, those rolls got in the way. But he never batted an eye. I’m head over heels in love with posing a 6 month old as a newborn!

It won’t be long before I see him again for his cake smash!

If I had a dollar for every time a client told me that I had the patience of a saint as their children run around like crazy clowns, I’d probably be able to retire.

Ok, maybe not, but I’d have a lot of dollars.

Really, I feel like I have to have a lot of patience, while my kids would disagree on that. Especially when it comes to someone else’s kids. I wouldn’t want to ruin the photography experience. Parents are already stressed out enough. They want their kids to be good, and I get that.

But the reality of kids is that they rarely do what we want of them. And that’s ok. If they are running around exploring the studio, that’s ok. I always try to get them to come and sit for a quick photo. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But I’ll keep trying. If they want to take a break and build a block tower. I’ll build with them.

In all honesty I’d much rather they run around and have fun when they’re with me, than scream and cry because I pushed them further than they were ready.

Nothing makes me happier than parents leaving less stressed than they came in. I don’t do it for the thanks, but honestly, it makes me smile when parents are walking out and they thank me for being so patient, and letting their kids be themselves. I always tell them it’s my pleasure to leave their kids with a positive experience.

So, all this, just to say. If your kid wants to come in, and be a kid, I’m ok with that. We will work at their pace, and try to reign them in. Come in, be relaxed and in a go with the flow mood will help us tremendously. You might be in a few photos that you didn’t expect to be in. But those are the best moments in the end.

Delilah has turned into a big girl since last time I saw her. She’s lost that baby look in her face, and is lightening fast. She knows what she wants, and what she finds funny.

She’s a climber, and was fascinated with my step stool. Every time we got her to sit down she would get up and run over to climb the steps. That was all she wanted, and again, I got scolded by her when I put it away where she couldn’t see it.

She was pretty fascinated climbing up and down the couch. Every time she was successful she would turn around and clap for herself. No one is a bigger cheerleader than a toddler, they love when we clap for them. So that is exactly what we did. Encouraged her to explore and have fun, and just be herself. I took photos along the way, but mostly just enjoyed watching her learn about her surroundings.

When you come in for those milestones at 1.5 years, be patient, be a cheerleader, and be prepared to be bossed around by your toddler! It’s ok, and we are going to embrace a lot more movement in your photos, they are everywhere all at once. And that is ok! I can’t wait to meet your little one, and become part of their cheer squad.

That first year truly flies by in a haze doesn’t it? Sofia is just about to be a girl on the move. She’s holding herself up on furniture now, and getting ready to take those first steps any day now. I hope not before her cake smash session. It’s so much harder to keep kids on a setup once they’re walking.

Sweet Sofia was just as adorable today, it took some convincing to get those cute smiles out of her. As always she’s little Miss Serious when she’s at the studio. Her brother was always the same way!

I couldn’t resist bringing out a prop that I used when I first met her big brother. He was a boy on the go, and we kept him still for a quick second by popping him into a deep wood bowl. He was 9 months old at the time, and it seemed fitting that we replicate the same idea for Sofia.

She wore the cutest outfits and I loved getting setups created that matched her outfits. I brought out some backdrops that I haven’t used in a while.

9 month sessions typically take place when your little one is standing on their own or against furniture. It’s the perfect way to follow up from a past milestone, which is confidently sitting up. I love getting a few sitting images, standing against a chair or even on their own. Watching your child progress is just so fun, and I want to provide my clients with a seamless timeline of their child’s first year.

It’s so fun to watch this little girl growing up. I can’t wait to see her again in a few months. But for now we will enjoy her Rochester 9 month session.

There are just some kids that make my job easy. Hazel (and her brother) are always those kids. Honestly, she was in and out in 15 minutes. She comes in, does everything I ask, and she’s out.

But these simple birthday celebrations sessions are also a piece of the puzzle. It can be so hard to keep kids on a setup. And the more extravagant the harder it gets. I’m constantly snapping away as they run around, and when I have to worry about filling in setups, or centering them in a balloon garland, it grows increasingly more difficult to capture mobile kids!

My focus in birthday sessions is just to capture kids personalities. I want their adorable smiles, their silly laughs. Maybe they’re in a phase of sticking their tongue out, or crossing their eyes when they laugh. Whatever it is, I want to grab those moments because they might be the little things that you forget about years down the road. It’s so important to document that for their keepsakes.

In birthday sessions I usually stick to a solid paper, and bring out some props for them to sit on. I’ll have them stand, and also sit on the floor. Hazel got to pick today, she chose all the chairs we used. The last chair however, I picked, because when I first met her big brother, I used a smaller version of this chair. And it stands as one of my favorite images at a birthday session. And now I make sure to get them into that chair every time they come in!

Sofia is growing in leaps and bounds. She came in all smiley, but really just wanted her mama snuggles.

She modeled three outfits from my client closet, which is always there for your sessions if you just don’t know what your child should be photographed in! It’s a growing closet, I’m always looking for fun pieces that will look amazing in the studio.

I love doing these milestone sessions in the lifestyle area of my studio, it feels so natural and warm. The kids seem to handle it well. Being able to play on the bed, or the rug, it just keeps them more comfortable. And that always makes for a better session!

Once in a while, however, I can’t resist taking a setup into the studio. And this little bear outfit is almost always my favorite one to do. Those little leg warmers are just to cute aren’t they?

He is keeping his mom on her toes. She chased him in circles the entire time at the studio. But it was so worth it, his 2nd birthday photos are a perfect representation of him.

And to be the icing on the birthday cake, he smiled for me! He was Mr Serious last time I saw him. And mom showed me his daycare photos, where he had the most adorable serious face. In every single one. When she showed me I thought “uh-oh, here we go, another round of serious”. But he pulled all the stops out and smiled when he wasn’t racing around.

We spent our session capturing him at his funniest, trying to convince him to sit still for just a moment. He and I played peek-a-boo, made silly sounds, funny faces and used the feather duster to tickle.

We also got a few with mom, and even snuck one in at the last second with Grandma.

He is a very loved little boy, and he has a blossoming personality. I hope you enjoy his 2nd birthday photos.
