I’m so glad she reached out to me. There is a silly industry standard that newborns need to be under 10 or 12 days old to have a successful session. NO WAY!!!!! Now, I do tend to photograph babies that are under two weeks old, but that’s only because I work your session around Dad’s paternity leave.

The truth is, I don’t really think age has anything to do with it. Sure, an 8 week old won’t curl and fold as much as a 2 week old baby. Once they’ve really stretched themselves out, they don’t want to curl back up. But, that doesn’t mean your images will be any less awesome!

As a Macomb Newborn Photographer, sessions are always directed by the baby, some are easy, some have tummy troubles, some are suffering from colic.

We all have a “trick” that we hope is the key to a great session (I hum, people laugh all the time about it, but I really think it works). But, if the baby doesn’t want to cooperate, our session is going to be hard. End of story. The good news? I am super patient, and I will work with your newborn to find what poses are most comfortable for them. We will wait out the gas bubbles, the nursing breaks, the awake times and I will deliver a gorgeous gallery to you!

I assured Suzanne that we would have a great session, I was completely confident that with patience we would have some amazing images for her and her husband Erick to treasure forever.

You know what? Charlie was the most adorable little 3 week old. He was an amazing sleeper, I think if his belly wasn’t bothering him, the session would have flown by. He had a tummy ache, and that never makes for a happy baby. Fortunately my amazing assistant Amber is a pro at the belly rubs. I would pose him, she would rub his belly. We got him settled and she would quickly stop rubbing his belly to get the image and go right back to it before he even knew what happened. And what we ended up with was a beautiful set of photographs, that I am so incredibly proud of.

I always get butterflies when I deliver a gallery, but Suzanne sent me this email:

“Oh Katie!
I cannot even begin to express how much I love these images. I am so so thankful that we went through with the shoot. Having these photos of our tiny little family captured in time is something I will cherish forever. They are truly beautiful!

And that folks, makes my heart burst. I love being a Macomb Newborn Photographer. I love working with newborns, meeting new families, hearing the stories that made them parents.

But knowing that I have given families a gift they can always look back on and enjoy, that is what brings me the most happiness. It’s a short window of time when babies curl up and fit in your hands like that. And that’s what I want parents to remember forever.

When I was scrolling through my FaceBook feed one day I spotted a photo of my niece holding this itty baby. I halted my scroll thinking “what in the world!!” I can’t possibly be that old that my niece’s friends are having kids right? It’s easy forget that I’m nearly 40 these days, and my niece is in her mid 20s. Sheesh! Crazy how fast time flies. I reached out to her mom and asked if they had a photographer booked yet, I needed to snuggle her little one.

Syren came in and was just perfect. She slept the whole time, she folded into every pose I tried with her. She just never complained about anything, which doesn’t surprise me. Her mom is super laid back, so I guess that’s an inherited trait Syren was blessed with. I loved it, I got to visit and socialize with her Mom and Dad. I haven’t seen Anya (her mom) in years. It was so fun to catch up.

The best part of a model call session is that I get to experiment with poses I don’t do in a standard session. This is how my galleries have evolved so much over the years. I love having the opportunity to expand my own knowledge in posing and lighting. This was the second time I did the new “mugshot” style photos where the baby is wide awake. I really love her cute expressions!

I’m grateful that her parents let me do her Metro Detroit newborn session, and that she was such an easy going little girl!

Nelson came to the studio recently for his session with me as his Macomb Newborn Photographer. He was one of my last babies of 2019.

I first met his Mom Kendall, when she came to the studio for her Complimentary Mini Maternity session. She spent her session talking about how excited she was to meet her new little love.

When Nelson came in, I immediately fell in love with his sweet little face. He was nice and sleepy, but he growled at me non stop. My assistant Amber and I just couldn’t get enough of his little noises. If he hadn’t been such a tiny little guy, he could have almost been intimidating. It was so endearing, and we giggled through his entire session.

First up was my absolutely favorite pose – Froggy. This is always done as a composite (or at least it should be, please don’t let your photographer do this unassisted). This is the pose I will work my absolute hardest at. I just can’t resist it, and showing off those sweet fingers and toes!

After the posing table we moved onto a quick photo in a winter wreath since we was born in December.

After a while of posing as sweetly as he could, he wanted to be wide awake. This period is sometimes hard for me, I definitely am a posed photographer and prefer my little baby clients to be sleepy. However, Kendall said she just loved staring at all the little expressions he made, so we took full advantage and did some “mug shots”. What a silly name, but that is what they remind me of. I really love them in black and white, and will always deliver them this way. It really lets the expressions shine!

I first met Jack’s parents a few years ago when his Dad, Cameron contacted me about photographing his surprise proposal to Jessica. He had it all planned out, what he was going to say, what he needed me to say to get it going. He was bringing Christmas gifts for his soon to be fiance and their son Kaiden to open. Kaiden was going to go first (a transformer I think?) and then it would be Jessica’s turn.

At first she was hesitant, Cameron had told her they were my idea, and were just empty boxes for decorations. He told her to just open it for the wrapping paper effect. He had purchased her a beautiful ornament for their tree that said “will you marry me?”. When she turned around he was down on one knee (which was buried in a good bit of snow!) She was so excited! What fun to be in on that surprise!

The day came for their Macomb Newborn Session and I couldn’t believe how much Kaiden had grown, he is such a handsome young man now. Kaiden loved on his little brother non stop. He checked on him if he fussed and sat next to me so he could watch me work with him. He couldn’t get in enough images with him.

Cameron told me he and Jessica had been following my work since their engagement session and I had photographed friends of theirs in the past. They knew I had moved into a studio. They just knew I’d be the one that they hired as their Macomb Newborn Photographer to photograph Jack. What an honor to know that past clients are so excited to come back to me!
