When parents have a special idea for their baby’s newborn portraits, I love finding a way to bring that vision to life. This sweet baby boy’s session was especially fun because his mom requested a Harry Potter newborn photography setup. Since I create custom studio portraits, we were able to add a little magic while still keeping the focus on her newest baby.

This wasn’t my first time photographing this family, either. I photographed their older son as a newborn, so welcoming them back to the studio for their second son made this session even more meaningful.

Creating Unique Newborn Photography Ideas

Not every newborn session needs to look exactly the same. While soft wraps, neutral colors, and classic poses will always have a place in newborn photography, parents can also incorporate details that reflect their family.

For this session, the magical theme gave us an opportunity to create something completely different from a traditional baby boy gallery. Instead of filling every image with themed details, we created a special setup that complemented the rest of his portraits.

As a result, his gallery included both timeless newborn images and a few photographs that felt uniquely personal to his family.

Bringing a Magical Theme Into the Studio

Themed newborn photography works best when the baby remains the star of the photograph. Therefore, I carefully designed the setup so the surrounding details supported the image without overwhelming him.

The goal wasn’t simply to recreate a movie scene. Instead, I wanted to capture the feeling his mom envisioned and translate that idea into a beautiful newborn portrait.

Additionally, using a studio setup gives me control over the lighting, posing, and composition. That control allows me to create a polished final image while keeping the actual newborn session calm and comfortable.

Photographing a Second Son

There is something special about photographing the second baby in a family.

Parents already know how quickly those newborn days disappear. They also understand how much their family will change once another little personality joins the mix.

Because I had photographed their first son, returning for his little brother felt like continuing a story rather than starting a new one.

Meanwhile, this little guy had his own personality to document. His tiny features, sleepy expressions, and brand-new place in the family deserved photographs that belonged entirely to him.
