Pregnancy is full of exciting firsts. Your first ultrasound, your first tiny kicks, and of course, your first baby bump photos. If you’re expecting your first child, you may be wondering when to take maternity photos so you look and feel your best. As a maternity photographer in Metro Detroit, I get this question all the time, and the answer may surprise you.

The Best Time for Maternity Photos

The ideal time to schedule maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this window, your bump is beautifully round and visible. But you’re usually still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy your session. Waiting too long can be tricky. Babies have a way of arriving on their own schedules, and you don’t want to miss your chance!

Why Maternity Photography Matters

Your first pregnancy is such a unique chapter in your story. You’ll never forget the anticipation, the excitement, and maybe even the nerves of waiting to meet your little one. Maternity photos are about more than documenting your bump—they’re about celebrating this life-changing journey and preserving it with images you can share with your child one day.

What to Expect in a Session

When you book with me, I’ll help guide you through every detail of your session. From outfit styling to location ideas, I make sure the experience is stress-free and enjoyable. Whether you picture yourself in a flowing gown at golden hour or cozy at home with your partner, we’ll create images that reflect your story.

Don’t Wait Too Long

If you’re wondering when to take maternity photos, the best advice is: book early. Many photographers (myself included!) schedule sessions months in advance. Getting on the calendar in your second trimester ensures you’ll have your preferred date and plenty of time to prepare.
