With a name like Lorelai and a family full of cousins and Aunts that love the show Gilmore Girls, I couldn’t resist doing a themed photo to honor it.

Her Great-Grandma knitted this blanket for her before she was born. It’s a favorite and I always see her sleeping wrapped up in it. So we wanted GG to have a keepsake of her gorgeous hard work!

Mom is a Dunkin fan (and has gotten my own daughter hooked as well. Dad is a gamer, so I spent about a week and a half wool felting the PS5 remote, headset and slice of pizza to create a look that will go perfectly in his gaming room.

Two more special images. My brother in law (her grandpa) has adopted some of the neighborhood squirrels and loves to feed them. I couldn’t resist creating this adorable little squirrel friend for him. The image on the right is Mom and Grandma’s hands. It’s so weird to call my sister a Grandma!

My neice is the co-owner of Sugarcoat Nail Loft in Rochester Hills. So I absolutely had to create an image for the salon. I made those little nailpolish bottles as well. So much wool felting, I stabbed myself so much.

My professional studio in Mt Clemens, Michigan has all of these elements. I keep the studio temperature warm for all guests. Because I use a small heater in the working area, I can keep the baby at the perfect temperature. I’ve spent years curating a collection of wraps, outfits, and props that perfectly support them. When you arrive at the studio with your new baby, my goal is to welcome you into a space that feels calm, comfortable, and unhurried. Those same goals apply no matter how many babies you bring into your family. Every child deserves the same care, patience, and attention.

From the start, we move at your toddler’s pace. I’m happy to let them warm up, explore the studio, talk with me, and get curious about what’s happening. We typically begin with family and sibling portraits. This helps ensure those moments are captured early, before patience starts to wear thin. While toddler meltdowns don’t happen often, newborn sessions can last a couple of hours, and that can feel like a long time for little ones. Once their part is complete, grandparents may pick them up, or dads often take them for a walk outside.

The studio is surrounded by great nearby spots. There’s an ice cream shop next door, a coffee shop close by, and Clementine’s just around the corner with truly delicious pastries. Pro tip: always bring mom back a coffee.

Inside the studio, there’s also a play kitchen that kids absolutely love. My husband and I built it when our own kids were little, and it makes me so happy to see it enjoyed by my youngest clients.

It feels so cliche to say, but even though the days felt so long, the years flew by so fast. Now, I love sitting down and going through newborn photos with my teenagers. My oldest just turned 17. It’s so crazy to look back on the blurry days of her as a newborn. It’s easy to forget how it felt when they fit in your arms. At her birthday party recently we were all taking turns reminicing about her as a baby and toddler.

The first time you hand them the car keys, you’ll long for the little toddler you pulled in a wagon. On their graduation day you remember that little 5 year old that smiled and waved to you at kindergarten graduation. When you drop them off to college, you’ll think of that restaurant in your family room where she perfected her cooking skills serving plastic fruits and veggies. I’m so grateful for the photo memories that we captured from their first breath. It’s been a treasure to look atnow that we’re prepping to send them out into the world.

Now I get to help other families that are just beginning their journey. I want you to keep those memories for years. One day, when you feel like you’ve done everything wrong, you can open a photo album, and realize that you’ve actually done everything right.

What should I look for when hiring a newborn photographer?

It’s important to choose a photographer who specializes in newborn photography and has experience working with infants. I’m a mom of three, and have been working with newborns and their families in the Metro Detroit area for 12 years. I’m dedicated to making your newborn photography experience comfortable, safe, and enjoyable for both you and your baby. I understand the importance of patience and communication with you, especially when you’re first time parents! Pull up a chair and hang out with me while I photograph your little one. I’ll be happy to walk you through the process if you’d like.

I firmly believe in hiring a well trained photographer. Someone that dedicates their time and money to professional training. Newborn photography is perfectly safe when done correctly. Education is important to know what the little signs of stress in babies are. And how to keep them safe in poses. Even how to use editing software correctly to composite together images like Froggy. Which should always be done as two images, brought together in Photoshop. I have trained with experts in my field to keep my workflow simple and safe for your precious newborn.

What can I expect during a newborn photography session?

During a newborn photography session, I encourage parents and siblings to participate in this special moment. At the studio I prefer to start with those family images. That will allow you to relax and rest for the remainder of your visit. I’ll work with baby to get through a series of positions that include wrapped and unwrapped poses in props and on my posing table. Some poses take a few extra minutes for baby to adjust and fall into a deep sleep. But feel free to ask any questions you have about what I’m doing. If you are sitting near me, I like to explain to your baby when is going on (even though they’re asleep). I like to think they’re listening and know that we’re working together to achieve a successful session.

When should I book my photographer?

The best time to get on my calendar is in the second trimester. All babies are booked by due date, and then a final date will be chosen once baby arrives. To capture the best moments, it’s important to let me know as soon as baby arrives. We will schedule your newborn photography session within the first three weeks of your baby’s life. But getting on my calendar as soon as possible during your pregnancy ensures my availability. On occasion I can take last minute sessions, but it depends on how many sessions I have planned for.

Do I need to bring anything?

Nope, you don’t need to bring anything to your session! Getting out of the house is hard enough. Let me make it easy by providing the props, wraps, hats, headbands, and even dresses for Moms! The studio has spare diapers, wipes, burp cloths, coffee, snacks, water and a couch for you to lounge on. Even a play area for siblings to hang out and be entertained by the play kitchen my husband and I built for our own children many years ago.

However, if you would like to bring a small personal item to incorporate into the photos, let’s talk about it ahead of time. Clients have brought rosaries or purple hearts that belonged to a grandparent. An important heirloom wedding ring, dads hat from his job as a police officer, parent’s dog tags etc. Not all items are safe to pose with a newborn. We will discuss these items at the start of your session, so best to reach out ahead of time.

When will I get my photos?

After your ordering appointment, you can expect to receive the final edited photos within 2 weeks. Prints or albums will be delivered 4-6 weeks after the digital files. I offer a range of packages that include both digital files and prints.

How much does newborn photography cost?

Newborn photography sessions can range from $500 to $5,000, depending on the package. This might seem like a significant investment. Keep in mind that newborn photography is a specialized service that requires a lot of time, effort, and equipment. I’m dedicated to providing high-quality images & products that you’ll cherish for a lifetime!

First Trimester: The Secret Life of Pregnancy

The first trimester is like a secret club where only you and your growing baby are members. During these first 12 weeks, your body is working overtime to create a new life, and you might be feeling the effects (hello, morning sickness). It’s like you’re part of an exclusive group that only fellow expectant moms can truly understand.

For many, the second trimester is the golden age of pregnancy, where you can finally start enjoying the journey. With the nausea subsiding and the baby bump showing, it’s time to embrace the experience.

Third Trimester: The Home Stretch

The third trimester is when things start to get real. As you prepare for your baby’s arrival, you’ll want to make sure you have everything in place for a smooth transition.

The Nursery. I have to be honest, ours was never anything as fancy as I see today. We had neutral walls and simple decor. I knew I’d want to change it often, so I kept it simple. We also didn’t find out the gender of our first two kids, so I didn’t want anything to specific.

The moment you’ve been waiting for is finally here: birth! Whether you’re planning a natural birth or a C-section, this stage is exciting and emotional!

I consider myself lucky. I meet a lot of new mamas, and I hear a lot of birth stories. There is no blanket birth story that can prepare you. I personally had easy deliveries. I did all 3 of mine without epidurals (thanks to a scary story I heard, which I’ll save you from, my choice of no epidural was more out of fear than experience). The most stressful part of my second birth was going to the hospital in active labor, only to find out they had no rooms for me, so I sat in the lobby with contractions until one opened up. I thought my husband was going to pace a hole in the floor!

Of course, these are moments you’ll always want to remember (even if things don’t go perfectly according to plan). Hiring a birth photographer, Fresh 48 photographer, or newborn photographer is something I’ve never heard anyone say they regret!  

The 4th Trimester: What No One Tells You

Surprise! Your journey doesn’t end with birth. The 4th trimester is the first three months of your baby’s life, where both of you are adjusting to the world outside the womb.

I love chatting with new parents (or experienced parents) at your newborn session. Over and over we talk about things you never knew going into the 4th trimester, what no books tell you. How they’d change their experiences the next time around. I think that professionals in the field do a great job providing support for new moms. But coming face to face with post partum depression, anxiety, breastfeeding issues, bonding, exhaustion, is so hard to really explain to someone until you’ve experienced it. Please, never hesitate to talk to someone you trust about any and all concerns you have. Make sure to have a safe support system that will listen, advise and help without judgement. We need a village, and sometimes you don’t realize it, you don’t have to do it all. Taking care of you, and your newborn is the #1 goal, so use whatever resources you can to make that easier on yourself. You and baby will both appreciate it!
